When Wal-Mart opened a new store in Evergreen Park, Ill., it donated $35,000 to local charitable organizations, including $1,000 to Grace Community Christian Reformed Church in nearby Oak Lawn.

William Weidenaar, a member of the Grace Community CRC council, said the council executive decided to accept the money and the full council ratified the decision. “There were no strings attached to it,” Weidenaar said. “It has nothing to with any Wal-Mart agenda.”

Weidenaar said the church hadn’t yet decided what to do with the money.

Other organizations that received money included schools, hospitals, police and fire departments, and libraries.
