Katrina Evacuees Find Refuge in Ripon

While sitting on the rooftop of his flooded home in Biloxi, Miss., Taun Anh Le saw a large board floating by. He and his wife, Thien Houng Minh, grabbed it. They tucked their daughter Angelina Thien into a box, put their baby Sarah Anh on a rubber tire, and they floated to their neighbor’s roof.

The family was saved, but conditions were bad. After spending 10 days in a community center without food, they flew to California via United Way’s donated flight credits. Connie Hoag of Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Ripon, Calif., was waiting for them. She settled the Le family in a fifth wheel trailer at her family’s home, where they can live for the next six months while they try to rebuild their lives.
