A Christian high school student from Cutlerville, Mich., has been named Mr. Basketball 2006.

South Christian High School senior David Kool was awarded the title as best basketball player in the state by the Basketball Coaches Association. “I give all the glory to God for the gifts he’s given me,” said Kool, 18.

South Christian’s coach Ken Hiskes said Kool displays more than game skill. “He’s a humble, caring kid who conducts himself wonderfully on the court. He’s respected by other players and officials across the state,” he said.

Kool said he sees a relationship between spiritual growth and improving his game. “You have to keep working hard to become a better Christian and person, just as in basketball,” said Kool, who attends Providence Christian Reformed Church, Cutlerville.

In the fall, Kool will head for Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., where he has a full scholarship. He plans to study education and become a high school basketball coach.
