Christina's Carol by Christina Rossetti; Illustrated by Tomie dePaola

For decades, renowned author\illustrator Tomie dePaola entertained and delighted children and adults with his vast collection—more than 270 books—for young readers. Prior to his death in 2020, dePaola planned a book portraying poet Christina Rossetti in 1872 composing her most famous poem, “In the Bleak Midwinter,” which subsequently became an enduring Christmas carol. Though dePaola died before he could finish his project, others completed it for him. Portions of his artwork depicting the birth of Jesus Christ in his other books—The Story of the Three Wise Kings; Merry Christmas, Strega Nona; The Legend of Old Befana; Christmas Remembered; and more—were compiled to illustrate Rossetti's poem.    

DePaola’s artwork and Rossetti’s poetry evidence adoration for God and his gift of Jesus: “What can I give him, / Poor as I am? / If I were a shepherd / I would bring a lamb; / If I were a Wise Man / I would do my part; / Yet what I can I give Him: / Give my heart.” 

Christina’s Carol is a lovely, encouraging reminder that the work of the Holy Spirit in God’s children throughout history can continue to touch the lives of children today. (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers)
