One of the most thoughtful and beautiful albums of newly written Christmas music of the past 20 years is Andrew Peterson’s Behold the Lamb of God. This year, Peterson has released a new version of the album, a faithful re-recording of the original with many of the same guest artists.

This album traces the story of the coming Messiah, beginning with the Passover and moving to God’s deliverance of his people, the messianic prophecies, and even the “begats” from Matthew 1. The emotional high point, though, is the set of songs in the last half of the album, beginning with “Labor of Love” and moving on through “While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks” and “Behold the Lamb of God.” It is a stirring and uplifting set of songs that brings us to an appreciation of the wonder of the true story of Christmas.

If you already own the old recording of this album, the new performances and improved sonics may not justify buying it again. But if you have not heard it, this is a wonderful opportunity to make yourself aware of this noteworthy recording. (Centricity Music)
