In this charming children’s picture book, author Linsey Davis’s rhyming verse and illustrator Lucy Fleming’s bright, cheerful pictures highlight the diversity of God’s creation in a classroom of youngsters: “Our faces make a rainbow, / lots of colors all around. / Shades of tan and melon skin / and even chocolate brown!”
But despite the diversity—different hairstyles, abilities, facial features, and personalities—the children share more in common than first meets the eye. They all have feelings. They all like to have fun, play, dance to music, eat lunch and learn. But most importantly, the children are alike because “God gave us all a special gift— / we each have one big heart. / The thing that matters most is something we can’t see. / The touch of God that’s inside you and also inside me.”
In today’s culture, which often fosters a “them against us” mentality, One Big Heart is a gentle, joyful reminder that God created one human race for his glory.
