In the midst of World War II, Nathaniel and Rachel are abandoned by first their father, then their mother, and they are left in their British home with a couple of strange characters. The siblings name them The Moth and The Darter. They are mysterious but protective men.
As the tale unfolds, we learn far more about Nathaniel than Rachel, including his trips with The Darter on a small boat smuggling racing dogs.
Later, as a young adult, Nathaniel turns to the mystery of his mother, trying to solve the puzzle of her life.
Author Michael Ondaatje has won the Giller Prize and the Booker prize, among others, for previous novels. Warlight is a wonderfully well-crafted tale of intrigue and espionage. (Alfred A. Knopf)
