Pastor Max Lucado offers practical, godly advice on anxiety in his latest book, Anxious for Nothing. Lucado notes that anxiety is a huge problem in the United States, citing a study that concludes it’s the number-one mental health problem among women and is second only to alcohol and drug abuse among men.
The book is divided into four sections based on Philippians 4:4-8, adding up to C.A.L.M.: “Celebrate God’s goodness,” “Ask God for help,” “Leave your concerns with Him,” and “Meditate on good things.” Lucado maintains that anxiety plays the “what if” game; he encourages readers to take charge of their minds, acting as air controllers of their mental airports.
In the back of the book are numerous encouraging Scripture verses to accompany the teaching of each chapter. This book is an easy read filled with hope for the anxious mind. A five-session video study and study guides are available for small groups. (Thomas Nelson)
