Eugene Peterson served as the pastor of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church in Bel Air, Md., for 29 years. As Kingfishers Catch Fire is a collection of sermons he preached to the congregation he so deeply loved.
When Peterson began preaching, he realized what he needed in his pastoral work—namely, a life of congruence “with no slippage” between what he said and the way in which he lived. In time, Peterson says he realized that he “was learning to embrace the congregation just as they were, not how I wanted them to be.”
The 49 sermons, published as they were preached with only minimal editing, are divided into seven sections, each with seven sermons “preached in the company of” Moses, David, Isaiah, Solomon, Peter, Paul, and John of Patmos.
