Mama used to love dancing, but not since her husband left her. To support her daughter, Luisa, Mama works diligently at Walter’s World of Beauty, cutting, curling, and coloring hair. Each day after school, Luisa’s bus drops her off at the salon, where Mama’s coworkers warmly welcome her.
At the end of each day, Mama puts her tip money in a special envelope marked “College.” Mama explains to Luisa, “The world is big. So much for you to see. One day, if I can, I will give the world to you.” However, Luisa has more immediate plans to give Mama the World—a surprise birthday party at Walter’s World of Beauty—and the opportunity to dance once again.
In this charming picture book, a single mother is honored by her enterprising daughter. Subtly and sensitively, young readers are introduced to challenges single parents might face and the impact that might have on their children. (Dragonfly Books)
