On Oct 12, 2013, girls in GEMS Club from all over Wisconsin gathered at Brookfield (Wisc.) Christian Reformed Church to spend the morning with their moms or mentors learning that God created them with a voice and a purpose. It was part of a one-day event in the We Walk Tour, which has visited a number of cities.
Participants included girls in grades 3 through 8, along with their moms or mentors. Keynote speaker Sara Lynne Hilton talked to the girls about God’s unique stamp on their lives and making a difference in the world: “No one else can walk like you can in your shoes,” she said.
Meanwhile, the moms and mentors received a special word of both encouragement and challenge from Kathryn Miller, the new executive director of GEMS, about journeying with their girls through this special phase of life.
Fourth-grader Megan Greenfield said that she liked all of the activities, and especially “loved spending the morning with my mom!”
“It’s so precious to see these girls praying for their moms/mentors and for the moms/mentors to pray for their girls,” conference coordinator Alecia Van Hulzen said.
The day’s events included videos, skits, games, interactive sessions, refreshments, prize giveaways, and learning, laughing, and worshiping. Several young women gave their hearts to the Lord.
Annie, a mother who attended, said that she and the other mentors were “teary-eyed when we left at the specialness of the day. Keep up the good work!”
The We Walk tour is scheduled to be in Grand Rapids, Mich., on November 9, and Abbotsford, British Columbia, on February 8, 2014.
