Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Wyoming, Mich., recently did its part to care for the environment by collecting old and unwanted computers, televisions, radios, and cell phones during an electronics recycling event.
The church collected 5,279 pounds (2,395 kilograms) of used electronics during the event, which were then turned over to Comprenew, a nonprofit electronics recycler based in Grand Rapids. Comprenew, in turn, gave the church more than $100 based on the amount of waste collected.
“It’s probably going to go toward our spring break mission trip,” said John Quist, church administrator and youth pastor.
Recycling events like these prevent used electronics from ending up in landfills.
The electronics recycling is just one of several projects Calvary CRC has undertaken in recent years to be better stewards of the environment. The church has also invested in a more efficient heating and cooling system, as well as new light bulbs. It has replaced Styrofoam cups with reusable coffee mugs, Quist said.
Comprenew, which has close ties with Worldwide Christian Schools, does all of its recycling on-site. “Electronics are becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives. Electronics have chemicals that will harm our environment if not treated properly. Most people don’t understand that,” president Scott VanderKooy said.
In addition to recycling the equipment, Comprenew also destroys any personal data that may be on computer hard drives, VanderKooy added.
