Police in the Detroit, Mich., area are searching for George Vander Weit, a retired Christian Reformed pastor. He left his home last Friday morning with no wallet or cell phone. Family and friends have been searching along with police, who have used search dogs and helicopters.

Media outlets report that Vander Weit had been released from a mental health facility just prior to his disappearance. Police have reported he may be a danger to himself.

Vander Weit is a member of Han-Bit Korean CRC in Rochester Hills, Mich. Prior to his retirement, he served churches in Michigan and Ohio. He is a regular contributor to The Banner’s Frequently Asked Questions column.

Vander Weit is well-known in the CRC community, having been a delegate to the church’s annual synod many times. He was an outspoken advocate for women serving in ecclesiastical office.
