Young Adults Represent Their Generation’s View at Synod

For Laura de Jong, 22, attending Synod 2013 was a huge encouragement about the direction the denomination is headed.

“I wish all young people in the Christian Reformed Church had the opportunity to come to synod,” she said. “Witnessing the process of synod is the most encouraging thing in the face of frustration and doubt.”

De Jong said that delegates welcomed the seven young adult representatives’ perspectives in advisory committees and on the floor of synod.

“We’re constantly having delegates coming up to us, telling us that they’re excited we’re here and they’re grateful for our words of wisdom,” she said.

Nicholas Chuba, 19, said that the young adult viewpoint is an important one to bring to the table.

“It’s really important that the young adults are represented at synod because, at a time when the church is dealing with issues directly involving youth and the youngest generations of the church, the perspectives we bring are indispensible,” he said.
