Elizabeth Hay, winner of the Giller Prize for her first novel, Late Nights on Air, is an even better writer in this novel about a young teacher in the 1930s on the bald prairie of Saskatchewan. Connie Flood is intrigued by her principal, Parley Burns, but suspects he may have raped a student, Susan Graves. Hay unfolds a matrix of relationships with a poetic mastery of sentence structures and language; it’s a great novel. (McClelland & Stewart)
