Once a prison inmate, Elder Tobias Lewis of Classis Atlantic Northeast has grown into a leader of his church.
Lewis became a Christian in his college years but later became addicted to cocaine. One day he asked God for the way out. Minutes later he was arrested. He said, “I quickly knew I didn’t get arrested; I got rescued.”
In prison he recommitted his life to Christ, though he later lapsed back into drug use. Now he has been drug-free for 14 years. His wife and daughter also follow the Lord, he said.
At Avery Street Christian Reformed Church in South Windsor, Conn., Lewis has served as deacon and now elder, taught Sunday school, started a men’s ministry, and been involved with the Narcotics Anonymous program.
“God has brought me through a process of growing and maturing in him,” Lewis said. “He’s doing a good work in me, and he is able to finish the work he’s begun.”
