As millions around the globe switched lights off to observe Earth Hour, a group of worshipers met in the darkened sanctuary of Community Christian Reformed Church of Meadowvale to sing, pray, and read Scripture.
Members of the Mississauga, Ontario, congregation gathered in a circle around a small fire contained in a metal pot in the church’s sanctuary. Some recited Scripture from memory, while others read Bible passages using candles and hand-cranked flashlights. The worshipers sang, clapped, and danced in praise of the Creator.
“Forgive us for what we’ve defiled and for species that are extinct and can no longer praise you,” prayed Peter Reitsma. Cynthia Stevens asked for God’s help in ending consumer lifestyles. “We’re stuck. Take off the blinders. Show us how to live in a simple way,” she prayed.
According to Wikipedia, Earth Hour is an annual international event created by the World Wildlife Fund, held on the last Saturday of March, that asks households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness of the need to take action on climate change.
