A sermon series on the gospel of John inspired the creativity of many members of Terrace (B.C.) Christian Reformed Church. Artists of all ages participated in creating a multi-textured, multimedia mosaic.
Rev. Joel Ringma had mapped out the themes and texts for the 16-week series. Congregants then signed up for a particular passage and were provided with a 24- by 24-inch canvas. After meeting with the pastor and discussing the intent and context of the passage, each person created an image to accompany it.
Each Sunday a new square was introduced at the beginning of the worship service and served as a roadmap for what the worship service and message would focus on.
“John’s gospel directed our worship service, and the artwork directed us to see and understand the good news of John instead of only hearing it,” Ringma said.
Henry Terpstra, who has never contributed in this way, was excited to be part of the project. The added value, according to Ringma, was that, like Terpstra, families and friends became invested in the message of John’s gospel through this unusual opportunity to participate, and the whole congregation was edified and surprised by their own giftedness.
