Two churches in the Midwest celebrated their 100th birthdays in recent months.

Corsica (S.D.) Christian Reformed Church celebrated in July with four former pastors on hand. Rev. Jerry Buwalda, current pastor, said that the former pastors sharing humorous tales of past events was a highlight of the celebration.

The church also hosted a pork barbecue for the entire community.

Two of Corsica CRC’s former pastors, Rev. A.J. Van Dellen and Rev. Doug Vrieland, now a U.S. Navy chaplain, preached on the anniversary Sunday.

In Iowa, First CRC of Sheldon also celebrated its centennial. Retired Christian school teacher Henrietta Postma was on hand to answer questions about why the church was started in Sheldon and who were the charter members.

A quartet from the 1970s reunited to perform on the anniversary weekend, and sketches represented events from several different decades.

First’s former pastors Rev. John Vermeer and Rev. Burton Antwerpen preached on the anniversary Sunday. The church produced a new pictorial directory, cookbook, and centennial book about the church’s history in honor of the occasion.
