For the 10th year in a row, the Christian Reformed churches of Classis Alberta North and The King’s University College teamed up to keep clean water flowing in Honduran communities.
The Honduras Water Project also involves the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee in Canada and in Honduras.
This year’s volunteers spent nearly a month in Honduras. “Our direct involvement was to build a storage tank and dig trenches for the feeder pipe from the water source that is 2 kilometers farther up the mountain,” explained John Hiemstra, professor of political science at The King’s and a member of Inglewood Christian Reformed Church in Edmonton.
“This was a great opportunity to support and directly experience Christian neighbors in the south and to experience development activities and theories about which I teach. The experience deepened my understanding of the problems and my resolve to follow Christ in the promotion of renewed ways of life,” Hiemstra said.
Mike DeVries, a King’s student and member of Neerlandia (Alta.) CRC, agreed. “Despite the language barrier we had, we were able to develop close relationships with many of the Honduran people we worked and lived alongside. It was special to be able to interact like that with our brothers and sisters in Christ.”
“This project really showed me that as children of God it is our calling to try to improve the quality of life for others,” says Karen Bylsma, another King’s student and member of Barrhead (Alta.) CRC.
