Peter Elgersma, serving Christian Reformed Church ministries in Canada since 2018, left that work as of July 5. A staff announcement June 21 said, “Several weeks ago, Peter Elgersma indicated that he will be leaving CRC ministry for other opportunities.” Elgersma did not respond to requests for a comment.
Elgersma was director of advancement, essentially a fundraiser for ministries, and since 2020 was also the director of congregational ministries in Canada. He also served as the interim deputy executive director-Canada from 2021 to 2022, aiding then-interim executive director Terry Veldboom, until the CRC in Canada hired Al Postma as transitional executive director.
Postma said the Canadian ministries office won’t fill the fundraising role right away. “We are using this brief interlude as an opportunity to ensure the position will meet the needs of Canadian ministries into the future, and then we expect to be posting an opportunity soon,” Postma said.
The role of directing congregational ministries in Canada has been added to the responsibilities of Lesli van Milligen, the Canadian office’s team leader for regional engagement.
Postma said that the change is not expected to impact staffing levels, either up or down, but ”we are always looking to ensure that our staffing structure is set up to serve the church as effectively as possible.”
The June 21 announcement invited staff to thank Elgersma “for his work over these past few years. We’re grateful for how God has used him to support the work of Christian Reformed Churches across Canada. And we wish him God’s richest blessings in his future endeavors.”
