Lifestyle choices students make in high school often stay with them for the rest of their lives. That is why positive role models like Coach Katte are so important. During his career, Dick Katte served the community at Denver Christian High School in a variety of different leadership capacities. He had a good understanding of the challenges students face. In his new biography, Over Time, Coach Katte shares his journey as a coach.
Most noteworthy are the relationships he developed and his way of leaving people in better condition than he found them. Several principles of character development and teamwork are included in the book, as well as Katte’s coaching technique and philosophy. He put a strong emphasis on defense, as most basketball coaches do.
Katte also included positive affirmations on the practice schedule. A photograph of him sweeping the floor illustrates the servant leadership he believes in. In some ways his career was similar to that of John Wooden, the former men’s basketball coach from UCLA. In 2005 he was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award by Calvin College.
