Pat Frouws recently made an unforgettable trip to Canada’s capital, Ottawa, Ontario. She was there to collect a Prime Minister’s Certificate of Excellence in Early Childhood Education, the highest national award in Canada for educators.

She was one of 10 recipients of this year’s prize. While in Ottawa, Frouws was privileged to meet Prime Minister Stephen Harper, his wife, and several other members of government.

Frouws, a member of Nelson Avenue Community Christian Reformed Church in Burnaby, has been executive director of the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Childcare Society for over eight years. The facility serves more than 300 children at its Burnaby location. Before moving to her current position, she was the director of Nelson Avenue Daycare, a ministry of Nelson Avenue CRC.

Frouws was nominated for the award by leaders in the SFU community. She was recognized for her professionalism, vision, and the strong values that build the foundation children need to make the best possible start in life.

“I believe that I have a calling and vision for providing the best care and early learning that all children deserve,” Frouws said. “I believe that my high-profile role affords me the opportunity to show the SFU community, governments, the ECE sector, and the broader community what that looks like. Excellence honours God.”

Frouws recently led the design of the daycare’s new environmentally friendly facility, which is classified as a “living building.”

“The building itself becomes a teacher in aiding the children to learn hope, creativity, passion, and compassion for others,” she explained. Her infant program at the centre also received the 2012 British Columbia Child Care Legacy Award.

When asked how she incorporates her faith into her work, Frouws said, “I pray regularly for the peace and prosperity of SFU Childcare and believe that God is answering this prayer through awards like this one and others.”
