Calvin University president Michael Le Roy is retiring this year. At the Christian Reformed Church’s synod, meeting on Calvin’s campus June 10-16, delegates recognized Le Roy’s 10 years as president and prayed for the transition.
Pastor Rebecca Jordan Heys, delegate from Classis Grand Rapids East, offered a prayer for Le Roy and for Calvin, thanking God “for calling him to the right season” and for his gifts of leadership and “gracious way of being in this community.”
Jordan Heys asked the Holy Spirit to “be at work in the hearts of each student and faculty,” thanking God for his guidance over the university’s future and asking God's blessing on incoming president Weibe Boer. “In all these things, we trust in your providence and place our home in your coming kingdom,” Jordan Heys prayed.
Le Roy was inaugurated in 2012 as the 10th president of Calvin. He announced his intended retirement last June.
Boer’s inauguration will take place in the fall.
Synod 2022 also ratified the Council of Delegates’ acceptance of Calvin’s bylaw changes implemented last year that allow the university’s board to search for and appoint its own president. Synod instructed the CRC’s executive director to update the CRCNA's governance documents to reflect the change.
John Lee, Classis Iakota, reminded synod that this does not mean that synod does not have a role but rather that the place for oversight is in the classes (regional groups of churches) nominating board members, which synod then appoints.
