The Evangelical Press Association (EPA) each year recognizes members for achievements in journalism and publication, presenting awards at its annual convention. Held this year April 7 to 9 in Oklahoma City, The Banner received nine different recognitions for work published in 2018.
For a denominational magazine in both the digital and print categories, The Banner received Awards of Merit for overall publication. The judges wrote, “Rich writing and glossy pages provide the feel of “high quality” journalism. I’m sure readers look forward to curling up with The Banner. Congratulations!”
Additional awards included:
- Second place for publication redesign: Dean Heetderks, Pete Euwema. Judges wrote, “This transformation is dramatic and comprehensive. Every inch of this magazine is improved. The execution shows great skill.”
- Second place for evangelism article: “A Pizza-Box Sign” by Elizabeth Drummond
- Second place for blog: single post: “Serving While Living with Disabilities” by Jenna C. Hoff.
- Third place for poetry: “Thinking He Was the Gardener” by David Schelhaas.
- Fourth place for single-theme section or issue: Synod Issue (July/Aug 2018)
- Fourth place for table of contents design: Dean Heetderks, Pete Euwema.
- Fifth place for blog: website: As I Was Saying, curated and edited by Shiao Chong, Judith Claire Hardy.
The Evangelical Press Association is a professional organization of Christian print and digital publications, embracing more than 300 members. Awards are given yearly in roughly 60 categories.
