Houston (British Columbia) Christian School might be the smallest school in its division, but it may very well have the biggest heart. The team recently made history as the first high school to send a co-ed team to the provincial boys’ volleyball championships.
The school didn’t have enough athletes to field a full team in the girls’ division, so it was given special permission to send a co-ed team to the senior boys’ competition. The history-making team moved up from their 12th-place ranking to finish ninth, no small feat for a school that boasts only four grade 12 students.
The group of seven boys and three girls ranged from grade 9 to grade 12, half of whom attend Houston Christian Reformed Church.
“A lot of people—referees, coaches, and other players—thought it was cool in a cute sort of way, but then they came back later and said they were humbly impressed . . . that those girls could really play,” said coach Ed Kronemeyer, who also attends Houston CRC.
The school’s athletics program strives to emphasize the message of 1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whatever you do, do it for the glory of God.” This theme is displayed as a motto on the back of the school’s team jerseys. “It garners a lot of comments, questions, and conversation starters,” said Kronemeyer.
