On April 29, 27 neighborhoods around Orange City and Alton, Iowa, found themselves a part of the first “Take It to the Streets,” a service-based Sunday organized by Living Water Community Christian Reformed Church in Orange City.

The event, spearheaded by Jim and Julie Haak, involved church members in serving individuals and community organizations.
“Many lives were touched that day,” Jim Haak said.
The theme for the event was “Go and Be the Church,” allowing the congregation to explore other methods of “serving” on Sunday.
“There is more to being a Christian than just going to church on Sunday,” Julie said. “Jesus himself served others every day of the week. Our minister serves us every Sunday. This was a way for the congregation to serve others instead.”
There were a few bumps in the road. Some members were skeptical, and others questioned the idea of working on a Sunday. Living Water found, however, that God provided guidance when they needed it.
The response they received from those they served was overwhelming. The Haaks and Living Water hope that “Take It to the Streets” becomes an annual event, and that it grows to include other churches and communities.
“Knowing that we gave up ‘going’ to church and instead were ‘being’ the church touched people in a bigger way than can be explained,” Julie said. “How great would it be if we could all go and be the church?”
