Bill Huizenga, a lifelong member at Haven Christian Reformed Church in Zeeland, Mich., will be representing Michigan’s 2nd District in the House of Representatives starting in 2011.
Huizenga said he ran for the office for five main reasons: his five children. “I’m not satisfied with the world they are inheriting, and I am adamant about cleaning up the mess that has been created,” he said. “I could not look at my children and say, ‘Daddy decided to sit this one out.’”
Huizenga, a Republican, said the United States is at a crossroads and he wants to “lead and participate in the movement that will maintain our country’s unparalleled history of success.”
Huizenga’s number one goal in Washington will be to stop out-of-control spending. “It is unsustainable and immoral to bankrupt future generations for not making the tough choices today,” he said. “We cannot borrow our way to prosperity.”
Huizenga had previously worked as district director for then Representative Peter Hoekstra in 1997. Huizenga plans to follow Hoekstra’s routine of sleeping on a couch in his Washington, D.C., office during the week and traveling home on the weekends to attend his own church and his children’s activities at Zeeland Christian School.
