A man of humility and integrity, Ezra Ng will be remembered as a caring, diligent shepherd who related to everyone with the heart of a father, teacher and friend. One elder in Ezra’s last congregation said, “He was truly a man of God who lived an exemplary Christian life. His life embodied the leaders of whom Paul referred in Hebrews 13:7, ‘Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.’” Ezra, just short of his 85th birthday, died Nov. 1, 2022, following a brief illness.
Born into a Christian family in Shanghai, China, Ezra graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Shanghai Teacher's College. After God called him to dedicate his life to ministry, he studied at China Theological Seminary in Hong Kong. He was then involved in various ministries, including 16 years of Christian radio ministry, and pastored churches in the Philippines and Hong Kong before being ordained in the Christian Reformed Church and serving Immanuel CRC in Richmond, B.C., from 2000-2010.
Ezra engaged with young people by playing chess. He organized a Tea Fellowship for new Asian immigrants to Canada where they gathered to make friends, share stories, and have discussions over a cup of tea. This eventually evolved into faith conversations and Bible study.
Even after retirement, Ezra was still active as an advisor to U-Campus Baptist Church, a Mandarin-speaking evangelical congregation near Vancouver’s University of British Columbia campus. He was also advisor to a Mandarin Christian church plant on Vancouver’s North Shore.
Ezra is survived by his wife, Phoebe, a son and daughter-in-law, and a grandson.
