Set in Toronto, Patricia Westerhof’s first novel The Dove in Bathurst Station features Marta Elzinga, a high school guidance counselor who is troubled and seeking direction in her life. A fleeting glimpse of a mink and seeing a curious pigeon hop aboard the subway are surely signs, but what do they mean? Marta embarks on some urban exploration, navigating the dangerous underground sewers and drains beneath the city. At the same time the author explores what lies beneath the surface of our spirituality and emotional health. Westerhof has crafted a multi-layered novel about hope and reconciliation with a writing style that is engaging and highly readable. Note: contains some adult content and language. (Brindle & Glass)
