Maurice, a little bear, is determined to find spring, even when Mama tells him it’s time to have a long sleep. While Mama dozes off, Maurice sets off in search of spring. As he wanders through the forest, he encounters Squirrel, Rabbit, Deer, and Robin, each busily making preparations for winter.
When Maurice sees a snowflake for the first time, he’s sure that he has found spring. He returns to the cave with a snowball and, satisfied that his search has been successful, he finally sleeps. When he wakes up, he’s surprised to discover that what he perceived as “spring” has vanished. Instead, he encounters the real season of spring in all its green, budding grandeur.
Carin Berger’s unique illustrations—cut-paper collages made from catalogues, ticket stubs, receipts, letters, and old books—add depth, contours, and detail tothis humorous and touching story that celebrates inquisitiveness and new revelations. (Greenwillow)
