Making friends is tough, especially if you are a porcupine like Elmore. Every time he befriends someone, he ends up needling them. The quills that are meant to protect him are keeping him from making friends.
One day, while cleaning up his discarded quills, Elmore thinks of a way to help others. He bundles the discarded quills and places them at the bottom of his tree with a sign that says FREE. Soon the other forest animals are using Elmore’s quills as pens.
The best part is the message they leave Elmore: “You are a beautiful porcupine.” This picture book is a great story for guiding children to be persistent in making friends. Some things are difficult, but so worth it in the end. Ages 3 and up. (Random House)
