We asked our reviewers to offer their five favorite titles of 2018 in a number of categories. While a few needed more than five, our gracious reviewers offer up some wonderful lists of great books, movies, music, and more. You can follow links to either the Banner review where available or more information on the title. Here are the lists:

From Josh Larsen, Chicago-based editor of Think Christian digital magazine from ReFrame Media, cohost of the radio show/podcast Filmspotting and author of the book Movies Are Prayers.

  1. Isle of Dogs (FOX Searchlight)
  2. Roma (Netflix)
  3. First Reformed (A24)
  4. Sorry to Bother You (20th Century Fox)
  5. Zama (Strand Releasing)

From Kristy Quist, Mixed Media Editor for The Banner.

  1. Eighth Grade (A24). A realistic portrayal of the pitfalls of being 14 years old.
  2. Black Panther (Disney/Marvel). Powerful story, strong characters, and great music.
  3. Isle of Dogs (FOX Searchlight). Breathtaking, intricate stop-motion animation.
  4. Monsters and Men (NEON). A small film about issues of race and power that has great compassion for its characters.
  5. A Quiet Place (Paramount). A love letter to life and beauty in the guise of a suspense movie.

Plus, some Quist family favorites:

  1. Paddington 2 (Warner Bros.). Fun and full of wonder.
  2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Sony). Great story and brilliant animation.
  3. Avengers: Infinity War (Marvel). We are just waiting to see what happens next.
  4. Ralph Breaks the Internet (Walt Disney). Imaginative and fun.
  5. The Hate U Give (20th Century Fox). A faithful adaptation of a powerful novel.
