Author of the three-book series Then Sings My Soul: 150 of the World's Greatest Hymn Stories, Robert J. Morgan now invites readers to embark on a meaningful spiritual journey by exploring the stories of the men and women who wrote and composed music for 52 of the world’s greatest hymns. Compiled into a prayer journal, the entries also share the music and words of each hymn, a pertinent Bible passage, questions for reflection, and quotes from historical personages.
Morgan appreciates the praise music played and sung currently in many North American churches: “We should always be singing a new song to the Lord, and every generation needs to contribute to the vast body of our hymnody.” However, he is concerned that many of the new songs aren’t enduring; he’s on a mission to save the great hymns that have remained for centuries. His prayer journal collection includes well-known hymns such as How Great Thou Art; Rock of Ages; Great Is Thy Faithfulness; Come, Thou Almighty King; and I Need Thee Every Hour. Significantly, many of the hymns were born out of deep pain, sometimes due to the authors’ physical hardships or mental anguish, or because of the political or ecclesiastical strife they experienced. In each story, God’s amazing grace shines through, and readers will be encouraged in their faith. (Thomas Nelson)
