In her sequel to her middle school novel, Where the Crops Never Fail, author Amanda Midkiff returns 10 years later to the idyllic Riverside Farm in Virginia where Farmer Jack continues to live after the death of his beloved wife Mary. His son Thad, daughter-in-law Kate, and teenage grandson Jake live nearby and help on the farm. Besides the human residents, a delightful assortment of talking animals live out their conflicts, disappointments, hopes, and joys in the barn and surrounding fields.

As in her previous book, Midkiff’s dialogue amongst the animals is expertly crafted and brings to light their idiosyncrasies, weaknesses, strengths, and opinions. Each creature is endearing and a wonderful part of the mix: Oscar and Greta the hogs, Bob and Sal the horses, Milly the terrier, Harriet the goose, Pete and Penelope the peacocks, Charlie and Anita the pond turtles, and Sunny the duckling.

When Harriet becomes restless after a near tragedy and feels that everyone thinks she’s literally a silly goose, she considers leaving the farm and seeking out a happier home. An unexpected interloper convinces Harriet that she is unloved and her life is boring. As Harriet sets out with her new friend on a quest for a better future, the two creatures face many obstacles. Soon, Harriet realizes that she has duped herself into believing something that is not true. Afraid to go home, she nevertheless overcomes her anxieties and takes the chance that she will be welcomed by old friends. The “prodigal goose” isn’t disappointed.

Illustrator Christopher Fowler’s winsome, engaging pictures complement Midkiff’s middle grade novel, which includes kind humor, biblical truths, wisdom for life, advice for healthy relationships, and a nascent romance. Discussion questions are included.
