A soon-to-be-released Canadian postage stamp was designed by Kevin van der Leek, a member of Fleetwood Christian Reformed Church in Surrey, British Columbia.
Van der Leek, a graphic designer, submitted the winning design for the stamp, which commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Vancouver Aquarium. “It has been such a thrill and an honor to be involved in this process,” he said.
Van der Leek considered a number of images for his design, finally settling on the gentle beluga whale with a silhouetted child standing in wonder against the aquarium glass.
The official release date of the 51-cent stamp will be June 15, the Vancouver Aquarium’s anniversary date. In addition to being available at all Canadian postal outlets, the stamp will go on display in the Canada Post exhibit in the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa and will be preserved in the Canadian archives.
