In Cary, Miss., more than 300 infants have been blessed with baby afghans crocheted by Anna Spender. Spender, who celebrated her 100th birthday May 21, 2005, began crocheting for Cary Christian Center in 1992. The afghans are included in layettes given to mothers who complete prenatal child care classes at the center. Most are pregnant teens.
Spender enjoys crocheting. Although her eyesight is beginning to fail, she is working on afghan no. 305. “People are so poor. I figured I could do something for them,” she said.
A member of the newly formed Grace Community Christian Reformed Church, she is the only living charter member of what was Evergreen Park (Ill.) CRC.
