In center from left, Rev. Jerry Hoek with Rev. Joseph Murupus in Marich, Kenya. The two met during a lunch break at Synod 2005 in Grand Rapids, Mich., when Hoek was a delegate from Classis Illiana and Murupus a fraternal delegate from the Reformed Church of East Africa. The men exchanged e-mail addresses and became prayer partners. This partnership led to Hoek’s congregation, Faith Christian Reformed Church in Nashville, Tenn., providing financial support for Kenyan students’ school tuition and food and shelter for church members. “We have continued to be amazed at how the little we give can go so far in that country,” said Hoek. Hoek and his wife, Claire, visited Kenya in March 2007. Murupus is moderator of the Reformed Church of East Africa, a position similar to that of the Christian Reformed Church’s executive director.
