1929 - 2007
Rev. Farquhar “John” Mac Leod, age 77, passed away June 18 in Sarasota, Fla.
Mac Leod was born Sept. 5, 1929, in New York City and grew up in North Arlington, N.J. He attended Upsala College in East Orange, N.J., and Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pa., graduating from Calvin Theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1956. He married R. June Fulcher of Passaic, N.J., in 1955.
The young couple began their ministry in Wanamassa, N.J., in 1956, serving that Christian Reformed church for three years. In 1959 they accepted a call to Preakness CRC, Wayne, N.J. They crossed the continent in 1965 to serve Bethel CRC, Lynden, Wash. In 1968 the Mac Leods returned to the eastern U.S. to serve Immanuel CRC, Wappingers Falls, N.Y. Ministry to three more churches followed: New Hope CRC, Dunwoody, Atlanta (1975); Trinity CRC, Richfield, N.Y. (1980); and Cape Coral (Fla.) CRC (1986).
Rev. Mac Leod retired in 1991. During his retirement he served eight churches as an interim pastor.
Mac Leod is remembered as a gifted preacher who treasured the Word of God and loved the English language. The Reformed faith and confessions were dear to him. A very approachable pastor, he related warmly with people from every walk of life. Children felt at home with him. His personal hobbies included caring for cars, which held few secrets for him.
Mac Leod is survived by his wife, June; by their children, Roderick and Karen Mac Leod, Rev. Douglas and Cathy Mac Leod, Kathryn and Mark Elliot, and Kevin and Cindy Mac Leod; and by 14 grandchildren and one great-grandson.
