Synod 2007 called for a study of all the covenantal, communal commitments we have as a denomination that will consider how best to finance those.
That includes a look at how ministry share, the denomination’s way of funding many of its ministries, is collected in the local churches. In order to maintain that system, which is the envy of many denominations and of charitable organizations, synod decided it needed to ensure its continuation by finding ways to improve it.
Questions have been raised about the overall way we fund our denominational ministries, about the way ministry share is raised, and whether the system discriminates against smaller churches.
The study committee will report to Synod 2009.
