Rarely are an individual’s contributions to the church noted by a formal act of synod. However, Synod 2007 passed a formal resolution expressing gratitude to God for the life and ministry of George Vandervelde, who passed away suddenly in January 2007.
The resolution regarding Vandervelde cites his “many years of service to the church worldwide and as an ecumenical ambassador for the Christian Reformed Church.”
“Before we simply pass this resolution and move on, I would like synod to pause for a moment,” said Rev. Herman Van Niejenhuis of Classis Iakota. “We owe a lot to George.”
The resolution concludes, “The Church in many places will miss his contributions to the oneness of God’s people in Christ.”
