Many churches bless their missionaries with prayers and money, but not all can reach out and touch them in person.
The church created a diaper cake to celebrate the diaper shower.
San Diego (Calif.) Christian Reformed Church has the advantage of living just miles from their missionaries to Mexico, James and Barbarita Lee.
“They are just across the border in Tijuana,” said Cyndi Boss, the church’s secretary. “We do participate in a lot more of their events than most churches do.”
When the Lees expanded their family by two little girls within 12 months, the church held a diaper collection. The Lees had struggled with infertility for years, so these two miracles so close together came as a great surprise.
Their adopted son, Joshua, joined their family in 2007, and they were considering adopting again when they discovered they were pregnant. Barbarita said, “We were very surprised and happy and thought that this was our ‘once in a lifetime miracle.’ Then, to our utter shock, we discovered we were pregnant again right after Jaedyn was born, and Jaelah was born only 10 months later.”
On a Sunday morning in May, San Diego CRC gathered to shower the Lees with diapers. James preached, then everyone enjoyed a potluck where the Lees were given over 1,200 diapers. Any diapers that won’t be used will be donated to the orphanage that the Lees work with in Tijuana.
Barbarita said, “They've been our home church away from home. They treat us like family, and now, every time I change a diaper, I remember how much they care about us as their missionaries! And that’s several times a day!”
