Grand Rapids Christian High School girls’ and boys’ cross country teams both won the Michigan championship in their school’s division.

“Our boys and girls team do start practice together, although we split up for the main portion of our daily training,” said coach Doug Jager about team practices. “Each practice begins with an explanation of the day’s plan and then devotions. Some devotions are led by the kids on the team, others by a coach.”

Along with the usual jog and typical drills, Eagles practices and meets included a reminder about goals with Coach Jager. Before each race, Coach Jager explained that the teams set three goals for their runs: Honor God; Enjoy the meet; Compete well. Have no regrets when you’re finished.

“If we could answer yes to those three [goals],” said Coach Jager, “we considered the meet a success.”

In addition to celebrating a team win against fellow schools and friendly rivals, the Eagles also celebrated individual victories. This year, six cross country runners also earned all-state recognition: Benny Briseno, Justin Varineau, Jim VanDyke, Claire Brouwer, Lindsey Fox, and Rachel Warners.
