Langley (B.C.) Christian School made history when they won a double banner in one sport in early December. Both the senior boys and girls’ teams brought home the gold banner in British Columbia’s provincial AA volleyball championships.
The girls went into the tournament seeded third place after a regular season that left them lagging behind. Without the pressures of being number one, the girls played with focus and determination to stay in the game until the end. Janae Bruinsma, member of Trinity CRC in Abbotsford, right-side hitter and assistant captain received first all-star team recognition and Corina Beimers, a member of the Bridge Community CRC, was named the tournament’s top libero (a defense specialist position).
The boys on the other hand came into the tournament seeded in first place and defending last year’s gold medal. This second consecutive win was no less sweet for a team that will graduate eight of its players in the spring. The final game was against neighboring sister and rival school Abbotsford Christian School.
The teams played their winning games within hours of each other; the boys team in their hometown while the girls team traveled to the small town of Vanderhoof in northern B.C. The school held a special assembly honoring the two teams the Monday morning following their golden weekend.
