That’s because Sterk is this year’s official Calvin Lecturer, part of the Calvin Worldview Lectureship cosponsored by Christian Reformed Home Missions.
The Calvin Worldview Lectureship series seeks to develop and communicate a Reformed Christian perspective on critical contemporary issues. Home Missions sponsors this outreach to students, staff, and faculty at more than 20 universities across North America.
Sterk, who teaches in Calvin College’s department of communication arts and sciences, is touring the globe speaking on the topic, “Can We Afford ‘Postfeminism’? Current Issues in Gender, Communication, and Faith.”
S he prepares and gives public lectures and seminars hosted by campus ministries at six universities in North America and several in Europe. She will also develop the lecture materials into a short book to be published as part of a series.
Each year, a member of the Calvin College faculty is chosen to be the worldview lecturer. The lecturer receives a one-course reduction each semester and is also freed from normal interim teaching duties.
Gender issues is a topic Sterk knows well as a teacher and writer on rhetoric, feminism, and popular culture. She’s the co-author of Who’s Having This Baby? Perspectives on Birthing (Michigan State University Press) and was co-editor of several books, including Gender and Applied Communication (Sage).
