The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) is the relief and development organization of the Christian Reformed Church. It responds, on your behalf, to the needs of people around the world who are suffering from poverty, hunger, disaster, and injustice. CRWRC also serves as your resource for volunteer opportunities, advocacy ideas, and educational materials about hunger, poverty, community development, and justice.
What’s New
Relatively few new disasters in North America this past year enabled CRWRC’s Disaster Response Services (DRS) to focus on helping regions still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Overall, 3,274 volunteers served in Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Texas, Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Washington, and New York. Nearly 60 percent of these volunteers were part of church or school workgroups serving one-week terms.
Internationally, CRWRC continued to respond to needs in Darfur (Sudan), drought-prone portions of Africa, and tsunami-ravaged regions of Sri Lanka and Indonesia. As a result, more than 700,000 people received emergency food or other aid and more than 8,200 tsunami survivors received shelter. Throughout the past year, disaster responses in the Philippines, Burundi, Ethiopia, Chad, and Jordan were supported in part by a growing number of volunteer international relief managers, who helped coordinate projects and distribute food.
Partnering with 124 churches and community organizations, CRWRC’s missionaries served in 30 countries to help people transform communities and overcome illiteracy, poor health, hunger, and poverty. CRWRC enables local leaders to identify needs in their communities, develop solutions, and carry out programs that will lead to lasting change.
