In 1912, Elspeth Dunn, a 24-year-old published poet, is isolated on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. She receives a letter from an American fan, David Graham. Initially as they correspond they share trivialities. However, as World War I looms on the horizon, they divulge their dreams and fears—and eventually their love.

When Elspeth and David meet, they set in motion a chain of events that tears Elspeth’s family apart for decades to come. Later, World War II thrusts Elspeth and her daughter, Margaret, back into the “first volume” of Elspeth’s life as both face the consequences of Elspeth's past choices.

This love story told in letters explores “how things can change in an instant in wartime” and “how quickly things can be lost.” Brockmole’s realistic characters wrestle with their conscience when making flawed choices in the midst of life’s messiness. (Ballantine)
