Sandra McCracken has been writing and singing thoughtful songs that speak to the Christian life and can be used in worship for over 20 years. With her first Christmas album, titled simply “Christmas.” she gives us just what we’d expect: a mix of gentle, carefully and simply delivered new songs with a few traditional carols that speak to the heart of the Christmas message.
McCracken’s versions of well-known carols are delivered without frills in the Americana style that characterizes much of her music. The rollicking “Jesus, What a Wonderful Child,” sung with Cindy Morgan and Gabe Dixon, is loaded with joy and is a standout track. Her song “The Space Between” gives McCracken the opportunity to meditate on the feeling of unease that many face between Christmas and New Year’s Day. She recognizes that the holidays can be a hard time for many, but she places those feelings in the context of a God who recognizes what it is to be human. He was human once and accepts us as we are. With this song and “Silent Night,” the album comes to a close with a deep sense of peace. This collection of songs is a beautiful reminder of how we can embrace the sacred story of Christmas.
