Cyclists planning for the third Sea to Sea tour rode into Synod 2013 Wednesday afternoon accompanied by their giant “gear truck.”
This summer’s tour will involve 219 cyclists, 87 of whom will ride from coast to cost. For the first time, American riders will outnumber Canadian riders.
Riders of the full tour are raising $10,000 each, not including their own expenses. The goal of the tour is to raise $1.5 million for anti-poverty ministries, including Partners Worldwide, RCA Global Missions, and World Renew.
The tour highlights partnerships between the Christian Reformed Church and its sister denomination, the Reformed Church in America—riders come from both denominations. “We wanted to celebrate what we do together,” said Claire Elgersma, tour organizer. “We do amazing things together.”
The nine-week ride starts on June 24 in Los Angeles and ends in New York City on August 24.
Synod 2013 is meeting at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. from June 7-14. For continuous Banner coverage of Synod 2013, please follow The Banner on Facebook or @crcbanner on Twitter.
