Grant Dykstra (left), Elijah Palmer (center), and Kyle Rietma (right) were part of the winning team at Dordt College’s first annual “Iron Chef” competition.
Ten teams participated in the event. Each team had a 60-minute time limit to create an appetizer, main course, and dessert. The secret ingredient, revealed at the beginning of the contest, was pineapple, and including it in the menu was mandatory.
Dykstra, Palmer, and Rietma are from Christian Reformed churches in South Holland, Ill.; Norfolk, Va.; and Hanford, Calif. Also on the team was Ricardo Aquino from Xalapa, Mexico, and Jander Talen from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
Calling themselves Team “Loin Kings,” they won $300 for their efforts, but the big winner was a local family crisis center that received 1,000 cans of food and $1,500 donated by contest attendees.
Dordt College is located in Sioux Center, Iowa.
